Traditional Birthday Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
    2/3 c. sugar
    1/2 c. milk
    1 beaten egg
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 eggs
    2/3 c. milk
    2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
Preparation
    Sift together flour, baking soda and salt.
    Combine chocolate, sugar, milk and beaten egg in saucepan.
    Cook and stir over low heat until chocolate melts and mixture thickens; cool.
    Stir shortening to soften.
    Gradually add sugar.
    Mix until light and fluffy.
    Add vanilla.
    Add the eggs one at a time.
    Beat well after each.
    Alternately add flour mixture and 2/3 cup milk, beginning and ending with flour.
    Beat after each addition.
    Blend in chocolate mixture.
    Bake in 2 paper lined or greased 9-inch layer pans at 350\u00b0 for 25 minutes (more or less).
    Remove from oven when cake separates from side of pan.
