Ingredients
    6 to 8 c. self-rising flour
    2 c. molasses
    1/2 c. sugar
    3 Tbsp. milk or buttermilk
    1/4 lb. butter, melted
    1 tsp. ginger
    1 1/2 tsp. allspice
    1 large jar apple butter
    1 egg
Preparation
To melted butter, add molasses and milk; heat until warm (do not boil). Mix sugar and spices in bowl with 5 cups of the flour; use remaining flour to sprinkle on board and add to dough as needed.
Make a hole in the center of dry mixture of ingredients; gradually add warm mixture to center.
Add egg; mix until thick. Knead like bread dough to roll out on board.
Use small amount of mixture rolled out desired thickness of 1/4-inch. Cut out desired size to fit pan to bake.
Bake each layer at 325\u00b0 for 10 to 15 minutes.
Check after 10 minutes for doneness.
Makes 8 layers. Stack layers, spreading tops of each layer generously with apple butter. \"Ice\" sides of entire cake with apple butter. Let cake \"set\" for a few days after \"icing\" with the apple butter. It improves with age.
