Smitty Cookies - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 2/3 c. flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 c. brown or white sugar
    3/4 c. shortening
    2 eggs, separated
    1 tsp. vanilla
    12 oz. red raspberry jam
    1/2 c. sugar
    1/4 tsp. cinnamon
    1/4 c. finely chopped nuts
Preparation
    Combine flour, salt and sugar in bowl.
    Cut in shortening like for pie crust.
    Beat egg yolks with vanilla; add to mixture and blend well.
    Press into two ungreased 8-inch square pans, about 1/4-inch thick.
    Bake at 375\u00b0 for 15 minutes.
    Cool slightly; spread with jam.
    Beat egg whites until they stand in peaks; gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.
    Cover jam and sprinkle with chopped nuts.
    Reduce heat to 325\u00b0 and bake 20 to 25 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.
    Makes about 36.
