Chop Suey - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 lb. pork, cut in small squares
    1 lb. veal, cut in small squares
    1 large onion, chopped
    2 Tbsp. shortening
    1 tsp. salt
    1 can bean sprouts, drained
    2 Tbsp. or more soy sauce
    4 oz. can mushrooms
    2 c. chopped celery
    pepper to taste
Preparation
    Heat shortening; add onion until light brown and add meat until brown, then add mushrooms.
    Pour boiling water over meat, immersing meat completely.
    Simmer for 2 hours.
    Keep adding boiling water to keep meat completely immersed at all times. After 1 hour of cooking, add celery, salt and pepper.
    Last half hour, thicken with flour and water.
    Add bean sprouts and soy sauce.
    Let simmer until done.
