Caramels - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. butter or oleo
    1 lb. brown sugar
    dash of salt
    1 c. light corn syrup
    1 (15 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. walnuts
Preparation
    Melt butter in 3-quart saucepan.
    Add brown sugar and salt. Stir until thoroughly combined.
    Stir in corn syrup; mix well. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly.
    Cook and stir over medium heat until candy reaches firm ball stage, 245\u00b0, about 12 to 15 minutes.
    Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.
    Pour in buttered 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
    Cool and cut in squares.
    Makes 2 1/2 pounds.
