Hermits - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3/4 c. shortening or margarine
    1 c. granulated sugar
    1 egg
    1/2 c. molasses
    2 tsp. baking soda
    2 1/4 c. flour
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    3/4 tsp. cloves
    1/2 c. raisins
    1/2 c. walnuts
Preparation
    Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses together thoroughly. Stir in remaining ingredients.
    Mix raisins and nuts last.
    Use an ungreased jelly roll pan.
    Shape into sausage-like rolls; 2 or 3 strips.
    Press down.
    Bake at 375\u00b0 for 9 to 10 minutes.
    Cracks may make them appear uncooked, but remove and cool.
    Cut into bars.
    Sprinkle granulated sugar on top while they are still hot.
