Velvet Chocolate Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. cake flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 c. brown sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    2 well beaten eggs
    1/2 c. cocoa
    1 c. cold water
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 tsp. soda in 2 Tbsp. boiling water
    1 c. chopped nuts (optional)
Preparation
    Sift flour 2 times with 2 tablespoons cornstarch if cake flour is omitted.
    Measure and mix with salt and cocoa.
    Sift again. Cream shortening; add sugar gradually, beating thoroughly after each addition.
    Add vanilla and well beaten eggs.
    Beat until fluffy.
    Beat in flour mixture alternately with the water.
    Add the dissolved soda and beat well.
    Bake in layer cake pans at 350\u00b0 for 30 to 35 minutes.
