Ingredients

3/4 c. butter or margarine
1/2 tsp. sugar
4 medium onions, sliced thin
1 Tbsp. flour
5 (10 oz.) cans beef broth, undiluted
1/3 c. dry red wine
1/2 tsp. white pepper
salt to taste
cayenne pepper to taste
8 slices French bread, toasted
3/4 c. Gruyere cheese
1/2 c. Parmesan cheese
3/4 c. shredded Swiss or Mozzarella cheese
Preparation

In a large, heavy pot, over medium heat, melt butter.
Add the onions and cook over high heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Then reduce heat to medium.
Add the sugar and cook until onions are golden brown, about 40 minutes.
