Fried Green Tomatoes - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 or 5 medium green tomatoes
    1/3 c. flour
    3/4 tsp. salt
    dash of pepper (optional)
    1/4 c. shortening
Preparation
    Wash tomatoes; remove stem ends.
    Cut crosswise into 1/2-inch slices.
    Combine flour, salt and pepper; dredge tomato slices with flour mixture.
    Brown quickly in shortening on one side; turn. Reduce heat and cook until slices are soft in center.
    Remove to hot platter; serve hot.
    Yields 4 to 5 servings.
