Mrs. Lewis' Rum Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. butter (2 sticks)
    2 1/2 c. cake flour
    1 tsp. rum extract
    1 tsp. baking powder
    6 small or 5 large eggs, separated
    1 3/4 c. sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
Preparation
    Cream butter and add sugar gradually.
    Beat at medium speed until well creamed (about 5 to 10 minutes).
    Add one egg yolk at a time, beating only until yolk is broken.
    Sift dry ingredients together and stir into batter along with rum extract.
    Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into cake mixture.
    Sprinkle 1/2 cup chopped nuts on bottom of a well-greased and floured tube pan, then pour in the cake batter.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 75 minutes.
