Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. cucumbers, thinly sliced
    2 large or 3 medium onions
    1/2 c. salt (plain)
    5 c. sugar
    5 c. yellow vinegar
    1/2 tsp. turmeric
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    1 tsp. celery seed
Preparation
    Mix the cucumbers, onions and salt; bury in ice.
    Let stand 3 hours.
    Drain well.
    Bring the sugar, vinegar and spices to a boil.
    Pour over cucumbers.
    Cook slowly, until mixture is scalding but not boiling.
    Put in sterilized jars and seal.
