Yurt-Style Vegetarian Stew - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. lentils
    1/2 c. green split peas
    1 bay leaf
    1/2 t. basil
    1/2 t. salt
    1 clove garlic, chopped
    1 med. onion, chopped
    3 lg. carrots, sliced
    3-4 leaves green cabbage, bite-sized
    4-5 c. water
    1 c. brown rice
    1 T. margarine
Preparation
    Put lentils and split peas together in a saucepan and rinse. Add bay leaf, basil, salt and 2 cups of water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and let simmer. Add water as needed to keep the peas covered, and adjust heat to keep the mixture at least at a simmer. After about 30 minutes, add the garlic and onion.
