Hermits - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3/4 c. shortening
    1 c. sugar
    1 egg
    1/4 c. molasses
    2 tsp. baking soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
    2 1/4 c. sifted flour
    3/4 tsp. ginger
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    1/2 c. raisins
Preparation
    Sift together soda, salt, flour, ginger, cinnamon and ground cloves.
    Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses well.
    Stir in remaining sifted ingredients.
    Add raisins last.
    Press evenly over ungreased jelly roll pan (11 x 17-inch) or shape in rolls about one inch in diameter and squash lightly with wet glass bottom to 1/3-inch thickness.
    Sprinkle sugar over dough.
    Bake for 9 to 11 minutes at 375\u00b0.
    Cracks in the cookies will remain yellow and appear uncooked, but remove from oven.
    Cool.
    Cut into bars.
