Ingredients

2/3 c. shortening
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. almond extract
1/2 tsp. grated lemon rind
1 egg, beaten
1 3/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. maraschino cherries or candied fruit, cut in pieces
3/4 c. shredded coconut
Preparation

Beat the first 6 ingredients until well blended.
Sift flour, powder and soda together; add to first mixture.
Beat well.
Add remaining ingredients; drop by level tablespoon onto greased baking sheets.
Bake at 375\u00b0 for 10 to 12 minutes.
