Old-Time Beef Stew - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 Tbsp. shortening
    2 lb. cubed chuck
    1 large onion
    1 clove garlic (optional)
    4 c. boiling water
    1 Tbsp. salt
    1 Tbsp. lemon juice
    1 tsp. sugar
    1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
    1/2 tsp. paprika
    2 bay leaves
    1/2 tsp. pepper
    6 carrots
    6 potatoes
    1/2 c. cold water
    1/4 c. flour
Preparation
    Heat shortening in Dutch oven or 6-quart pot.
    Add beef; brown 20 minutes.
    Add remaining ingredients except for potatoes, carrots, cold water and flour.
    Cook over low heat for 2 hours. Then add vegetables and simmer until tender.
