Burnt Sugar Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. water
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    2 egg yolks
    2 1/2 c. flour
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 egg whites
    1/2 c. sugar
    2 Tbsp. butter
    1/4 c. canned milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Spread 1/2 cup sugar in iron skillet.
    Put over medium flame and burn until a golden brown syrup forms.
    Remove from stove. Add 1/2 cup boiling water; allow to cook until thick.
    Remove from heat; let cool while you mix cake.
