Aunt Lorena'S Date Loaf Candy - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. sugar
    1 c. evaporated milk
    pinch of salt
    1 Tbsp. butter
    2 c. dates, chopped
    2 c. chopped walnuts
    2 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    In a large saucepan, boil sugar, milk, butter and salt until a little mixture forms a hard ball when dropped in cold water, about 250\u00b0 on a candy thermometer.
    Stir occasionally to keep from scorching.
    Stir in dates; cook until tender.
    Take from fire and beat until cool and thick.
    Stir in nuts and vanilla.
    Pour half onto wet cloth and roll into a log shape.
    Repeat for the other half.
    Store in the refrigerator; cut in slices to serve.
    This is a very old family recipe.
