Apple Caramel Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. margarine
    1/4 c. shortening
    1 c. brown sugar, packed
    1 3/4 c. unsifted flour
    1 c. oatmeal
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. baking soda
    4 1/2 c. diced apples
    3 Tbsp. flour
    3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
    1 bag caramels, melted
Preparation
    Crust:
    Cream together the margarine and shortening; add the brown sugar and flour.
    By hand, stir in oatmeal, salt and baking soda.
    Reserve 2 cups of the mixture and pat the rest into the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
