Savory Cheese Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
    1/2 tsp. basil leaves
    1/2 tsp. oregano leaves
    1/2 to 1 tsp. lemon pepper (optional)
    2 cloves garlic, smashed
    1 large loaf unsliced French bread
    8 oz. yellow cheese (Cheddar, Colby)
    8 oz. white cheese (Monterey Jack is good)
    3/4 c. warm (not hot) water (110~ to 115~)
    1 pkg. active dry yeast
    1/4 c. sugar
    1 tsp. salt
    2 1/4 c. sifted Gold Medal flour
    1 egg
    1/4 c. soft shortening or butter
Preparation
    Mix:
    In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
    Add sugar, salt and about half the flour.
    Beat thoroughly 2 minutes. Then add egg and shortening.
    Beat in rest of flour gradually until smooth.
