Date Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 c. boiling water
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 egg
    1 2/3 c. flour
    1 tsp. soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
Preparation
    Pour water over dates.
    Cool to room temperature.
    Stir shortening to soften.
    Add sugar and cream together until lighter. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well.
    Sift flour, salt and soda; add to creamed mixture, alternately with the date mixture.
    Stir in nuts. Bake in 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan at 350\u00b0 for 35 to 40 minutes.
