Buttermilk Spice Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
1 c. buttermilk (not sour milk)
    2 Tbsp. hot tap water
1/2 c. diced, candied orange rind or 1 c. diced dates
    1 c. raisins (optional)
2 c. unbleached flour (sifted before measuring)
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
    1/4 tsp. ground cloves
    1/2 c. (1 stick) butter (not margarine)
    1 1/4 c. packed brown sugar
    2 large eggs
Preparation
Pour buttermilk and hot water over orange rind or dates and raisins if used; let stand while assembling other ingredients. Sift together flour, salt, baking soda and spices.
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy; add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk mixture, beating until smooth after each addition.
Turn batter into greased and lightly floured 9 x 9-inch pan.
Bake in preheated 350\u00b0 oven about 45 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool slightly; while still warm, spoon Broiled-On Frosting on top.
Place under broiler until frosting bubbles and browns lightly.
    Serves 6.
