Amalgamation Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. sugar
    1 1/2 c. butter (no substitutes)
    1 c. buttermilk
    4 c. all-purpose flour
    2 tsp. soda (mixed in buttermilk)
    1 tsp. cloves
    1 tsp. ground allspice
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 pt. blackberry jam
    8 egg whites, beaten
    1 c. raisins (floured well)
    1 c. nuts, chopped well
Preparation
    Cream sugar and butter well.
    Add buttermilk, soda and flour sifted with the spices.
    Add jam, nuts, raisins and vanilla.
    Add beaten egg whites; fold in and mix well.
    Pour into four 9-inch greased and floured cake pans.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for about 40 to 45 minutes.
