Apple Rings - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    10 or 12 large cucumbers, peeled and cut in rings about 1/4-inch thick
    1 c. pickling lime
    1 c. vinegar
    1 Tbsp. alum
    1 small bottle red food color
    2 c. vinegar
    10 c. sugar
    8 broken sticks cinnamon
    6 oz. red hot candies
    water
Preparation
    Soak cucumbers in solution of
    1 cup pickling lime to 1 gallon of water for 24
    hours.
    Rinse
    and soak in clear water for 3 hours;
    drain and rinse again.
    Simmer rings in solution of 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup water, alum and red food color; do not boil.
    Drain and cover with syrup mixture of 2 cups vinegar, 2 cups water, sugar, cinnamon and red hot candies; bring to boil until red hots melt.
    Drain
    rings
    and
    cover with syrup mixture, boiling hot. Pack rings in jar and seal.
