Italian Cream Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 stick butter
    2 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. buttermilk
    1/2 c. shortening
    5 eggs, separated
    2 c. flour
    1 c. flaked coconut
    1 c. chopped pecans
Preparation
    Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and set aside.
    Cream butter and shortening; add sugar and beat until creamed.
    Add egg yolks and mix thoroughly.
    Stir in vanilla.
    Alternately add flour and buttermilk mixture to butter mixture.
    Stir in coconut and chopped pecans.
    Beat egg whites until stiff.
    Fold into batter. Divide batter between 3 greased and floured 9-inch pans.
    Bake in a 350\u00b0 oven until done.
    Test with toothpick.
