Ingredients

1/2 c. butter, softened
1 c. packed dark brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. hot water
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour

Preparation

In mixing bowl, cream butter, brown sugar and egg.
Stir together baking soda and water; add to creamed mixture.
Add vanilla and flour; mix well.
Shape into walnut sized balls. Place on greased cookie sheet; flatten with a fork that has been dipped in water.
Sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 325\u00b0 for 15 to 20 minutes or until edges begin to brown.
Cool on waxed paper. Yield:
3 1/2 dozen.
