Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    7 lb. pickling cukes
    4 onions
    1/2 c. salt
    1 bag ice
    5 c. sugar
    5 c. brown vinegar
    1 Tbsp. pickling spice
Preparation
    Slice cukes; sprinkle with salt and bury in ice for at least 3 hours.
    Then drain well.
    Bring sugar, vinegar and spices to a boil, then add cukes and return to scalding (not boiling).
    Cuke will turn different color when ready.
    Fill hot jars.
    Yields 7 or 8 pints.
