Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. small cucumbers, sliced
    2 hot green peppers
    8 small white onions
    1/2 c. salt
    4 1/2 c. sugar
    2 tsp. turmeric
    5 c. vinegar
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
Preparation
    Wash and slice the cucumbers.
    Mix the salt with the peppers and onions and cover with crushed ice.
    Let stand in refrigerator for 3 hours.
    Drain and add sugar, turmeric, vinegar, cloves and mustard seed.
    Mix; drain vegetables.
    Put on low heat and heat to scalding point but don't boil.
    Seal in hot jars (using the instructions for a reliable canning manual).
    Makes about 5 quarts.
