Great Grandmother Francis' Famous Filled Cookies - cooking recipe

Ingredients

1 1/4 c. sugar
2/3 c. shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
pinch of salt
1 c. milk
2 tsp. baking soda
4 tsp. cream of tartar
enough flour to roll a soft dough
1 1/2 boxes dark seedless raisins (3 c. packed)
grated rind of 1 orange
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 Tbsp. flour
piece of butter the size of walnut (about 2 Tbsp.)
just a little boiling water

Preparation

My dad reports his grandparents had to constantly tell all the children to stay out of the cookie jar before dinner! They looked forward to these cookies every Christmas.
