English Toffee - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sugar
    2 Tbsp. light Karo
    4 oz. slivered almonds
    1 c. butter (oleo)
    2 Tbsp. water
    1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits
Preparation
    Mix ingredients together in a saucepan.
    Cook, stirring constantly, to 200\u00b0 or 210\u00b0.
    Stir in almonds.
    Continue to stir and cook to 300\u00b0.
    (Candy will change to a darker tan color.) Pour into a greased 9 x 5-inch pan.
    Sprinkle with chocolate bits. When they are melted, spread with a spatula.
    May sprinkle with ground pecans, too.
    A candy thermometer is very helpful.
    Recipe can be doubled.
