Chocolate Date Nut Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. boiling water
    2 c. dates, cut up, or raisins
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 3/4 c. flour
    3/4 tsp. baking soda (again)
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/4 c. cocoa
    1 stick plus 1 Tbsp. butter
    1 c. sugar
    2 eggs
    1 tsp. pure vanilla
    1/2 c. sugar
    3 c. chocolate chips
    1 c. walnuts, chopped
Preparation
    In a bowl, combine boiling water, dates and baking soda; mix well and set aside.
    Sift flour, baking soda (1 teaspoon), salt and cocoa.
    In mixer, beat butter and 1 cup sugar until smooth. Add vanilla and eggs, one at a time.
    Add to dry ingredients; mix well.
    Add date mixture; mix well.
    Pour into greased and floured 13 x 9-inch pan.
    Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over batter.
    Bake at 325\u00b0 for 20 minutes.
    Remove from oven; cover with chocolate chips and walnuts.
    Return to oven for 30 minutes.
    Cool before cutting. Refrigerate leftovers.
