Ingredients

4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 c. vegetable shortening
2 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
2 eggs
2/3 c. sour milk or buttermilk
1 c. chopped pecans
1 c. candied cherries, cut in quarters
2 c. dates, cut up
2 (4 oz.) cans (1 c.) candied fruits and peels
red or green candied cherries for top (optional)
Preparation

Sift flour and measure.
Sift again with soda and salt. Cream shortening.
Add sugar and eggs.
Beat until light and fluffy.
Add sour milk and flour.
Add nuts, cherries, dates and candied fruit.
Chill dough for several hours.
Drop by teaspoonfuls, about 2-inches apart, on lightly greased baking sheet.
Top each cookie with half a candied cherry.
Bake in moderate oven at 375\u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes.
