New England Baked Beans - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 pkg. California peas or kidney beans (pick over carefully)
    water
    1/3 lb. salt pork (lean or fat)
    1 full c. granulated sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    1 large onion, cut small
    1 large pepper, cut small
    1 Tbsp. butter
    salt and pepper to taste
Preparation
    Soak beans overnight in water (8 to 12 hours).
    Boil beans for approximately 30 minutes.
    Drain and place in a large Pyrex bowl.
