Split Pea Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 lb. split peas
    4 c. water
    1 meaty ham bone
    1/3 c. chopped onion
    1/3 c. chopped celery
    1/3 c. chopped carrot
    1 small bay leaf
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 small clove garlic
Preparation
    Wash and drain split peas.
    Combine all ingredients in a kettle with tight fitting lid.
    Bring to boil.
    Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 2 hours.
    Stir occasionally.
    Remove bone; cool slightly.
    Cut ham off bone and dice.
    Add to soup and heat thoroughly.
    Remove bay leaf before serving.
