Rich Yeast Batter - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3/4 c. lukewarm milk
    1/4 c. sugar
    1 tsp. salt
    1 yeast cake
    1 large egg, beaten
    1/4 c. soft shortening
    2 1/2 c. sifted flour
Preparation
    Mix together the milk, sugar and salt; crumble yeast into mixture.
    Add egg and shortening; stir until shortening is melted. Add flour and beat for 1 minute, at least 100 strokes.
    Scrape down from sides of bowl.
    Cover with damp cloth and let rise at 85\u00b0 until double in bulk (about 1 3/4 hours).
