Ingredients

3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. dark molasses
1 egg
1 tsp. soda
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
Preparation

Melt shortening and sugar.
Add molasses and egg.
(Cool enough to not cook egg.)
Beat until well mixed.
Add other ingredients.
Chill at least 2 hours or overnight.
Make 1-inch balls.
Roll in sugar.
Bake on greased baking sheet for 8 to 10 minutes, until cracks appear on top, at 375\u00b0.
