Red Cabbage - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 medium to large head red cabbage, sliced thin or shredded
    2 apples, peeled in thin slices
    1 large onion, cut in half
    salt and pepper
    1/2 c. vinegar
    1/2 c. sugar (for less tartness, add more)
    2 cloves
Preparation
    Soak cabbage in water (to cover) with 1 tablespoon of salt mixed in for 15 to 20 minutes.
    Rinse and drain well.
    Put in a large pot with no more water added.
    Put cloves in onion halves. Add to cabbage.
    Add all other ingredients.
    Let boil, then simmer, covered, for one hour.
