Mount Vernon Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/4 lb. sugar
    1/2 lb. butter
    1 3/4 lb. flour
    6 eggs
    1 pt. sour cream
    1 tsp. soda
    1/2 lb. citron
    2 lemons (juice of 1 and rind of 2)
    1 tsp. nutmeg
    some mace
    1 lb. raisins
    1 lb. currants
Preparation
    Cream butter and sugar; add the egg yolks, well beaten, then the cream and flour with spices alternately, then the well beaten egg whites.
    Last of all, the well floured fruit.
    Bake about 2 hours.
    Cover top first hour with buttered paper.
    This was probably baked in a brick oven at Mount Vernon.
