Elsie'S Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    cucumbers
    salt
    alum (size of walnut)
    diluted vinegar
    6 c. sugar
    1 oz. celery seed
    1 qt. vinegar
    1 oz. stick cinnamon
    1 oz. whole allspice
Preparation
    Split or cut in rings all pickles. Soak in brine made of 1 pint salt to 1 gallon water for 3 days. Drain and soak in fresh water for 3 days, changing to fresh water each day.
    Put in 1 gallon water, 1/2 cup vinegar and alum solution; simmer until hot through, 15 to 20 minutes; drain. Place pickles in jars. Boil vinegar and spices for 3 minutes.
    Pour over pickles and seal. Will be ready to use in 10 days.
