Split Pea Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 lb. split peas, washed
    1/4 c. ham base
    2 carrots, finely diced
    1 onion, finely diced
    roux (flour and oil paste)
    2 c. diced, cooked ham (optional)
Preparation
    In a large pot, cover peas with water almost to top of pot. Cook on medium approximately 1 1/2 hours.
    Test for softness. Peas must be soft enough to mash.
    Add 1/4 cup ham base and mash. Thicken with roux.
