Navy Bean Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 lb. navy beans
    water to cover plus 2 inches
    ham bone or salt pork
    1 onion, coarsely chopped
    2 carrots, sliced
    2 or 3 celery ribs, coarsely chopped
    1 large can tomato sauce
    1/4 tsp. dry mustard
    2 cloves
    2 peppercorns (optional)
Preparation
    Bring beans to boil and boil for 5 minutes.
    Let stand for 1 hour.
    Add other ingredients and simmer until done, then salt to taste.
    Additional water may be needed during cooking.
    Soup thickens as it cools.
    Makes 2 to 2 1/2 quarts.
