Genuine Fig Preserves - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 qt. ripe figs
    5 lb. sugar
    2 lemons, sliced
Preparation
    Wash well select ripe firm figs.
    It is not necessary to peel figs and the stems may be left. Cover the bottom of a large enamel (white) boiler with a layer of sugar.
    Put a layer of figs on top of this.
    Alternate the layers until the figs and sugar are used up, ending with a layer of sugar.
    Be sure sugar covers all the figs.
    Put a cover on boiler and put in the refrigerator overnight.
