Real French Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 pkg. dry yeast
    1 Tbsp. sugar
    2 c. warm water
    2 tsp. salt
    4 c. sifted flour
Preparation
    Dissolve yeast in 1 cup warm water.
    While yeast softens, sift flour, sugar and salt in large bowl.
    Stir in dissolved yeast. Add enough of second cup of water to hold dough together.
    Mix well until you have a sticky dough.
    Let rise until double in bulk.
    Punch down and knead.
    Give it a good beating.
    Divide into equal parts.
    Place in a greased baking dish or loaf pan.
    Cover and let rise again.
    Bake at 400\u00b0.
    For a harder crust, brush top with egg whites.
