Patty Melt - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 lb. ground chuck
    1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
    1 tsp. vegetable oil
    1 large onion, sliced
    4 slices rye bread
    2 slices Monterey Jack cheese
    1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
Preparation
Combine beef, salt and pepper and mix lightly.
    Shape into 2 patties.
In a greased heavy frying pan, grill hamburger patties over medium-high heat 4 to 5 minutes per side for rare and 6 minutes per side for medium.
Add vegetable oil to pan and then onions.
Saute onions until soft and golden brown.
Top 2 slices of bread with hamburgers, then with onions, a slice of cheese and remaining slices of bread.
Lightly butter outside of sandwich and grill on a griddle or in a heavy frying pan until brown on both sides and cheese is melted.
(If you prefer, you can make sandwich with rye toast and melt the cheese under a broiler.)
