Ingredients

1/4 c. shortening
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
Preparation

Heat oven to 350\u00b0.
Heat shortening in 1 1/2-quart saucepan over low heat until melted; remove from heat.
Mix in brown sugar, vanilla and egg.
Stir in remaining ingredients.
Spread in greased square pan, 8 x 8 x 2-inch.
Bake 25 minutes.
Cut while warm.
Makes about 16 brownies.
