Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 gal. cucumbers, sliced
    1 pt. salt
    alum (size of walnut)
    1/2 gal. vinegar
    8 pt. sugar
    1/4 c. pickling spice, tied up in cheesecloth
Preparation
    Put sliced cucumbers in stone jar.
    Add salt to 1 gallon boiling water.
    Pour over cucumbers. Let stand for 1 week. Drain and wash cucumbers.
    Add alum to 1 gallon boiling water. Pour over cucumbers.
    Let stand for 24 hours.
    Drain and wash.
