French Vegetable Beef Soup - cooking recipe

2 lb. beef stew meat, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1/4 c. salad oil
1 (10 1/2 oz.) can condensed onion soup
1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
1/2 c. grated Parmesan cheese
1 Tbsp. basil
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
8 carrots, sliced
2 c. sliced celery
1 (16 oz.) can waxed beans
1 (16 oz.) can kidney beans
Preparation

About 2 1/2 hours before serving:
In Dutch oven, over medium-high heat in hot oil, brown meat well.
Reduce heat to medium.
Stir in undiluted soup, 5 soup cans of water, tomato paste, basil, salt and pepper.
Simmer, covered, 1 1/2 hours.
