herring in sour cream on rye bread
sardines on rye bread
marinated mushrooms with other marinated vegetables

Appetizers have always been a great tradition in a Polish meal. As soon as a guest entered the home, food would be served.
The guest would present the host with a good bottle of vodka.
In order to insure that no one would get too \"lively\" the hosted quickly put together an appetizing meal.
\"Feasting\" was above all understood as passing time in community and sharing the pleasures of life.
