Shrewsburg Squares - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sugar
    1 c. butter or margarine
    1 egg
    3 c. flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. vanilla
    jam (any jam may be used)
Preparation
    Cream butter and sugar.
    Add remaining ingredients. Take 1/2 and spread in greased 8 x 8-inch pan.
    Put layer of jam on top. Then add remainder of mixture.
    Sprinkle with white sugar.
    Bake in a 350\u00b0 oven until delicate brown.
    Cut in squares.
