Nine Day Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    pickles
    3 tsp. alum
    sugar
    salt
    vinegar
    spices (as desired)
Preparation
    Wash pickles and slice.
    Add 1 cup salt to every gallon and add boiling water.
    Let stand 3 days.
    Take out and wash.
    Put 3 tablespoons alum in plain water; let stand 3 days.
    Take out and wash pickles.
    Heat vinegar, spices and sugar (1 cup sugar to 1 cup vinegar). Pour over pickles and let stand 3 days.
    Put in jars.
    Heat vinegar mixture and seal.
