Italian Cream Cake - cooking recipe

1 stick butter
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
5 egg yolks
2 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/3 c. coconut
1 c. chopped pecans
5 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Preparation

Cream butter and shortening.
Add sugar and beat until mixture is smooth.
Add egg yolks and beat well.
Combine sifted flour and soda and add to cream mixture, alternately with buttermilk.
Stir in vanilla.
Add coconut and pecans.
Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Grease and flour 3 (8 or 9-inch) cake pans.
Pour in batter and bake at 350\u00b0 until cake looks done, about 25 minutes. Cool and frost with cream cheese frosting.
